Us Department Of Veterans Affairs - Unprofessional & Inept Conduct by VA Employees
On Thursday September 24, 2015 I journeyed to the Brooklyn VA medical Center to obtain a refill of my prescribed medications. On that date I was informed by the pharmacy clerk that all of my medication except for the prescription for Tramadol could be given to me on that day. I require Tramadol because I suffer from chronic back pain from complications of VA spine surgeries in 2005, and a follow-up surgery in March 2015, and I was prescribed Tramadol years before this medication was designated as a controlled substance and have never abused or engaged in drug-seeking behavior; in fact my current job is to assist mental health consumers, including those with substance and alcohol issues. On Thursday September 24, 2015 the Brooklyn VA pharmacy clerk informed me that I could come back to pick up the prescription next Monday, September 28, 2015. On this date the same pharmacy clerk informed me that I no refills on the Tramadol medication. This pharmacy clerk could have informed me that there were no refills on Thursday September 24th, instead of asking me to return next Monday only to then tell me that there were no refills. I then went to Brooklyn VA Pod *** an attempt to consult my prescribing pain management physician at the Brooklyn VA, Dr. Rochelle Rubin, only to be told that she was out that day for religious reasons (Jewish Holiday), and I was asked to speak to a nurse who could assist me. After about 5-10 minutes nurse Patricia Hamm came to the Pod F desk and asked the clerk (even though I was the only person standing and waiting at the desk) in a condescending and annoyed-sounding voice: "Who is the guy that needs help?". Nurse Hamm’s body language seemed to indicate that she was annoyed at having to speak with me, and the tone of her voice was very severe. When began to explain my situation, nurse Hamm interrupted me with a comment about me shouting at her. At no time was I shouting, I was speaking at the same level of voice that I engaged with the clerk. It appears to me that nurse Hamm was seeking to portray herself as a victim, someone being shouted at and abused, simply because she did want to interact with me. When I said "I’m not shouting at you, I just want you to do your job, nurse Hamm then replied "Do my job, I’ll show you", and then she walked away, never to be seen again. My complaints are thus: I feel that the pharmacy clerk was very either being cruel (by telling me to return and then telling me that I didn’t have refills) or very, very inept and unprofessional, especially for a person whose job is to assist and facilitate the wellness of US military veterans. This caucasian, male clerk can easily be determined by consulting the electronic records for the dispensing pharmacy clerk in these two instances. My complaint about nurse Hamm is that she also was unprofessional in her demeanor, attitude, and actions. For her to abandon her employment duties when asked to do her job should be considered a breach of her employment contract, and should also be addressed (I worked in a Brooklyn-area hospital emergency room for 14 years, and I have seen nursing professionals reprimanded for less). Also for nurse Hamm to sarcastically refer to me as "the guy" (while I was standing there) is also unprofessional: I am a US Air Force Veteran that served 2 tours and I was standing in a VA hospital-I am not "the guy"!Are the actions of the pharmacy clerk indicative of the service that we veterans must accept while seeking medical care at VA facilities? Does the VA condone the actions of nurse Hamm by abandoning and abdicating her job duties by simply being asked to do her job? Are these the levels of respect and assistance that we US veterans can and should expect while seeking medical assistance at VA facilities?
